IX. 14:1-17:10 SOME CONDITIONS FOR KINGDOM DISCIPLES

A. 14:1-24 MAINTAIN KINGDOM PRACTICALITYAND HUMILITY

1. 14:1-6 JESUS JUSTIFIES SABBATH HEALING

a. 14:1 THE SABBATH AND PHARISEES

And it came to pass, when he went into thehouse of a certain

of the rulers of the Pharisees on a sabbath to eat bread, that THEY were watching him.


b. 14:2 And lo, a certain man was before him with dropsy.

c. 14:3 JESUS CHALLENGES THE JEWISH RULERS

And :Jesus answered andspoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees,

LEgon, Exes-tin to sabBAto the-rePEUsai, e ou?

saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath, or not?


d. 14:4a But they were silent. hoi de heSUcha-san [2270].


e. 14:4b And he took him, andhealed him, and let himgo.

f. 14:5 JESUS REVEALS TRUE ANSWER TO SABBATH

And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a son or an ox fallen into a well,

and will not straightway draw him up on the sabbath day?


g. 14:6 And they could not answer again unto these things.

2. 14:7-11 LESSON ON HUMILITY

a. 14:7-9 THE AMBITIOUS GUEST

Ele-gen de pros tous ke-kleMEnous [2563] pa-ra-boLEN,

And he spoke a parable unto those bidden,

ePEchon [1907] pos tas pro-to-kliSIas [4411] e-xeLEgon-to [1586]; LEgon pros auTOUS,

when he marked how they chose out the chief seats; saying unto them,

8When you are invited of any oneto a marriage feast, sit not down in the chief seat;

lest haply onemore honorable than you is invited of him,

9and he that invited you and him shall come andsay to you, Give this manplace;

and then you shall begin with shame to take the lowest place.


b. 14:10 THE WISE PROCEDURE OF WEDDING GUESTS

all' HOtan kleTHES, po-reuTHEIS aNApe-se [377] eis ton Escha-ton TOpon;

But when you are invited, go andtake the lowest place;

HIna HOtan ELthe ho ke-kleKOS se, eREI soi,

that when he that has invited you comes, he shall say to you,

PHIle, pro-saNAbe-thi [4320 aNOte-ron: TOte EStai soi DOxa eNOpi-on PANton ton su-na-na-keiMEnon soi.

Friend, go up higher: then you shall have glory in presence of all that sit at meat with you.


c. 14:11 For every one that exalts himself shall be humbled; and who humbles himself shall be exalted.

3. 14:12-14 HEAVENLY REWARD FOR HOSPITALITY TO THE POOR

a. 14:12 INVITE POOR GUESTS WHO CAN'T REPAY

And he said to him also that had invited him,

HOtan poiES Ari-ston [712] e DEIPnon [1173], me PHOnei tous PHlous sou,

When you make a dinner or supper, call not your :friends,

meDE tous a-delPHOUS sou, meDE tous sug-geNEIS [4773] sou,

nor your :brethren, nor you :kinsmen,

meDE GEIto-nas [1069] plouSIous; ME po-te kai auTOI an-ti-kaLEsoSIN se, kai GEne-tai an-taPOdoMA soi.

nor rich neighbors; lest haply they also invite you again, and recompense be made to you.


b. 14:13-14 THE DESCRIPTION OF SUCH GUESTS

all' HOtan doCHEN poiES [4160], KAlei ptoCHOUS, a-naPEIrous [376], choLOUS, tuphLOUS:

But when you make a feast, invite thepoor, maimed, lame, blind:

kai maKAri-os Ese; HOti ouk Echou-sin an-ta-poDOU-NAI [467] soi:

14and you shall be blessed; because they have not anythingto recompense you:

an-ta-po-doTHEse-tai GAR soi en te a-naSTAsei ton diKAIon.

for you shall be recompensed in the resurrection of the just.


4. 14:15-24 PARABLE OF THE GREAT SUPPER

a. 14:15 A FATUOUS RESPONSE

A-KOUsas DE tis ton su-na-na-keiMEnon TAUta,

And when one of his:fellow-guests heard these things,

EIpen auTO, MaKAri-os [3107] HOstis PHAge-tai ARton en te ba-siLEIa tou TheOU.

he said to him, Blessed whoever eats bread in the kingdom of :God.


b. 14:16-17 THE GREAT SUPPER

ho de EIpen auTO, ANthroPOS tis ePOIei DEIPnon MEga;

But he said to him, A certain man was making a great supper;

kai eKAle-sen polLOUS: kai aPEstei-len ton DOUlon auTOU te HOra tou DEIPnou

and he invited many: 17and he sent forth his :bondman at the supper :hour

eiPEIN tois ke-kleMEnois, ERches-the; HOti Ede HEtoiMA [2092] es-tin.

to say to those invited, Come; for thingsare now ready.


c. 14:18a And all with one accordbegan to make excuse.

d. 14:18b THE FIRST EXCUSE

ho PROtos EIpen auTO, A-GRON eGOra-sa [59],

The first said to him, I have bought a field,

kai Echo aNAGken e-xelTHON iDEIN auTON: e-roTO se Eche me pa-re-teMEnon.

and must needs go out andsee it: Pray you have me excused.


e. 14:19 THE SECOND EXCUSE

kai HEte-ros EIpen, ZEUge [2201] boON [1061],

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen,

kai po-REUomai do-kiMAsai [1381] auTA: e-roTO se Eche me pa-re-teMEnon.

and go to prove them: Pray you have me excused.


f. 14:20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore cannot come.

kai HEte-ros EIpen, GuNAIka Ege-ma [1060], kai diA TOUto ou DUna-mai elTHEIN.


g. 14:21a And the bondman came, andtold to his :lord these things.

kai pa-ra-geNOme-nos ho DOUlos, aPEGgei-len [518]tokuRIoauTOU TAUta.


h. 14:21b THE ANGRY RESPONSE OF THE WEALTHY LORD

TOte or-gisTHEIS [3710] ho oi-ko-deSPOtes EIpen to DOUlo auTOU,

Then the house-master being angry said to his :bondman,

Exel-the taCHEos [5030] eis tas plaTEIas [4113] kai 'RUmas [4505] tes POle-os,

Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city,

kai tous ptoCHOUS kai a-naPEIrous [376] kai tuphLOUS kai choLOUS eiSAga-ge HOde.

and bring in here the poor and maimed and blind and lame.


i. 14:22 And the bondman said, Lord, what you did command is come to pass and yet thereis room.

j. 14:23 THE LORD'S FURTHER RESPONSE

kai EIpen ho KUri-os pros ton DOUlon, Exel-the eis tas hoDOUS

And the lord said unto the bondman, Go out into the highways

kai phragMOUS [5418], kai aNAGka-son [315] ei-selTHEIN, HIna ge-misTHE [1072] mou ho OIkos.

and hedges, and compel themto come in, that my :house be filled.


k. 14:24 For I say unto you, that none of those :men :invited shall taste of my :supper

B. 14:25-35 STRICT CONDITIONS OF DISCIPLESHIP - COUNT COST!

a. 14:25-26 STRICT DISCIPLESHIP CONDITONS

Su-ne-poREUon-to de auTO OCHloi polLOI: kai straPHEIS, EIpen pros auTOUS, EI tis ERche-tai PROS me,

Now great crowds went with him: and he turned, andsaid unto them, 26If any comes unto me,

kai ou miSEI [3404] ton paTEra he-auTOU, kai ten meTEra, kai ten guNAIka,

and hates not his own :father, and :mother, and :wife,

kai ta TEKna, kai tous a-delPHOUS, kai tas a-delPHAS,

and :children, and :brethren, and :sisters,

Eti te, kai ten psuCHEN he-auTOU, ou DUna-tai EI-NAI mou ma-theTES.

yes, and his own :life also, he cannot be my :disciple.


b. 14:27 Whoever does not bear his own :cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

c. 14:28 WISE PRELIMINARY PLANNING FOR BUILDING

tis gar ex huMON, THElon PURgon [4444] oi-ko-doMEsai,

For which of you, desiring to build a tower,

ouCHI PROton kaTHIsas psePHIzei [5585] ten daPAnen [1160], ei Echei eis a-par-tisMON [535]?

does not first sit down andcount the cost, whether he has sufficientto complete it?


d. 14:30 THE SHAME FOR FAILING TO DO SO

HIna ME po-te, THENtos auTOU theMEli-on [2310], kai me isCHUon-tos [2480] ek-teLEsai [1615],

Lest haply, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish,

PANtes hoi the-oROUNtes ARxon-tai auTO emPAIzein [1702], LEgon-tes [HOti],

all that behold begin to mock him, 30saying [that],

HOUtos ho ANthro-pos ERxa-to oi-ko-doMEIN, kai ouk Ischu-sen ek-teLEsai.

This :man began to build, and could not finish.


e. 14:31 WISE WAR PLANNING

etis basiLEUS, po-reuOme-nos heTEroba-siLEI sun-baLEIN [4820]eis POle-mon,

Or what king, going to encounter another king in war,

ouCHI kaTHIsas PROton bouLEUse-tai [1011]

will not sit down first andtake counsel

ei du-naTOS es-tin en DEka chi-liAsin hu-panTEsai to meTA EIko-si chi-liAdon er-choMEno ep' auTON?

whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand?


f. 14:32 Or else, while the otheris yet far off, he sends an ambassage, andasks for peace.

g. 14:33 A BLACK AND WHITE APPLICATION

HOUtos oun pas ex huMON hos ouk a-poTASse-tai [657] PAsin tois he-auTOU huPARchou-sin [5224],

So therefore whoever of you renounces not all that he has,

ou DUnaTAI EInai mou ma-theTES.

cannot be my disciple.


h. 14:34 :Salt therefore is good: but if the salt also have lost savor, with what shall it be seasoned?

i. 14:35a It is fit for neither land nor dunghill: mencast it out.

j. 14:35b Who has ears to hear, let him hear. ho Echon Ota aKOUein, a-kouEto.


NOTE: (2010-12-11) - 14:7-11 - This trait of the Pharisees in always wanting to be prominent - always to have chief seats - always pushing themselves for honors - can still be seen today. This is soopposite to Jesus and His Father, for God was inChrist reconciling the world to Himself. No wonder the Jewish religious leaders wanted to kill Him. He showed them up. He set forth the true life of humility.


14:12-14 - This lesson from Jesus is notnormally practiced, even in Christian circles. To put the poor, maimed, lame and blind before those who could pay us back? Not even thought of! But Smith Wigglesworth of Bradford, England in his day didthis very thing again and again, because of this very passage of scripture. Then at the close of such a meal, he would pray for the sick and see them healed! Then the next week at the free meal - the healed ones from the preceding week entertained the new poor guests by giving their testimonies - and preparing the new needy ones for healing also!


14:15-24 - Parable of the Great Supper. “Many are called, but feware chosen. Many are invited - but fewrespond. Not many wealthy and wise and mighty hear the Kingdom invitation of Good News - and respond! It is the poor and needy who hear and come to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. The first invited ones have forfeited their opportunity!


14:25-35 - Clear Kingdom Conditions that should not be neglected! Discipleship is a voluntary choice on our part. God never coerces us! But once we consider discipleship for ourselves, the follow-through is very important and often costly. It demands our all! Ifany man wants to! But ifwe choose to, thenit will cost us everything! Romans 6 - Identification with Jesus in His death through baptism - that'sthe picture! And how does Jesus end this picture? “Who has ears to hear, let him hear!”- this was one of Pastor Robert Birch's favorite verses. But we are not to forget that after the Cross- then the Crownthrough the Resurrection! J.A.W.
